The kidney is one of the major vital organs of the human body, which purifies the blood by removing waste substances and excess fluid in the form of urine, maintaining homeostasis in the body. Several clinical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, ageing, family history of kidney failure, autoimmune diseases, high medications, glomerulonephritis, kidney stones, or tumours, are major risk factors that can cause abnormal functioning of the kidney and its damage.

This kidney dysfunction urges the need for frequent dialysis, the process through which unwanted waste products such as urea and creatinine are eliminated from the blood, and electrolyte balance is maintained.

Rise in kidney failure incidences, shortage of kidney donors, MHC incompatibility issues, delayed and high-cost procedures, etc., prompt individuals to recommend dialysis over kidney transplantation.

The Current Scenario in Dialysis:

Kidney disease is one of the fastest-growing causes of death globally. This has resulted in the demand for dialysis (an artificial process of eliminating waste from the blood) growing at a rate of 31% per year, compared to 8% in the rest of the world. According to a report published by Precedence Research, the global dialysis market size was USD 108.7 billion in 2021 and is expected to exceed around USD 196.1 billion by 2030. To address this issue, the public and private healthcare sectors are making efforts to increase dialysis centres all over India, which requires trained dialysis technologists, who are essential members of the team in providing specialized care to kidney failure patients.

As a student in this course, you will learn about dialysis machines, water treatment systems, patient care during dialysis procedures, and managing complications that may arise.
