Overview

Infertility is more common than most people think. Today, as many as one in five couples trying to have a baby will experience infertility. There is a huge surge in infertility among couples, and its percentage is increasing day by day. In fact, recent studies show that, after a year of marriage, 15 percent of couples are unable to conceive, which could be due to changes in various environmental factors and the lifestyles of the couples.

To address this issue, many Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) units have come up all over India, fueling the increasing demand for trained and qualified professionals. In these ART units, apart from the clinician, an individual educated and trained in embryology is a key team member.

There is a need for professionally trained embryologists within the country and all over the world. In fact, there are very few institutions in India that offer a well-designed, practically oriented postgraduate programme in clinical embryology. Since an embryologist is the backbone of an ART unit, the M.Sc. curriculum is designed in such a way that after successfully completing the program, the student will be competent enough to take up a job as a clinical embryologist in any ART unit. This programme also opens the avenue for advanced research in the field of infertility.
